Nica having survived an attempt on her life by Chucky has been sent to an asylum convicted of murders Chucky committed. However, Chucky isn't finished with her yet. Meanwhile, Andy, who has confronted Chucky in the past, has his own plans for Chucky...
I have two confessions to make about the Child's Play/Chucky series of films. The first is that I haven't actually seen any of them since Child's Play 2 way back in 1990. The second confession ties in with that. I wasn't a fan of the second film (I haven't seen it since 1990) and as a result just lost interest in the character and series.
However, at this years FrightFest the the first film was the world premiere of the latest film in the series, Cult Of Chucky.. However not having seen any of the films since 1990, would this new film make sense to someone who hadn't seen the previous film and would it reignite my interest in the character?
Well, on the first question, while the Andy strand of the story, doesn't quite work here, although that could be due to not having seen the previous films, the main strand of the story, that of Nica battling with Chucky once more, does hold up to audience members who haven't seen the previous film. In some ways, it's a standard, mental asylum story in that an innocent character can't get anyone to believe them of the true cause of the murders. But it works well in this film.
The violence is often quite bloody, but this is offset by Chucky's quips again voiced brilliantly by Brad Dourif. Don Mancini who has written all the films and here directs his third film in the series and does direct the film very well indeed. The death scenes are well done, the humour in the script is well done and works well.
As for the cast, Fiona Dourif plays Nica and is a great lead. Jennifer Tilly returns as Tiffany and while her role is small here, she's good in support. Alex Vincent, who has played Andy since the very beginning of the series, is okay too in a supporting role.
The story does take a few surprising turns, including in the final act and also has a few twisted moments too. It moves at a good pace throughout and is never dull. There is a post-credit scene, which I admit didn't work for me, but fans of the series seem to enjoy. Maybe I should watch the rest of the films I haven't seen!
For someone who hasn't seen a Chucky film for years, it took a few minutes to get into the story, but once I had, I did enjoy the film. It might not be original, but it is an entertaining watch.
As a film to kick of FrightFest it was truly a fun beginning.
Rating - 3/5
