And, surprise, this is mine!
Personally, overall I would say 2017 was a good year for cinema. I definitely saw more good films this year than those I wish I hadn't. Even films that were flawed (looking at you, Justice League!) I found enjoyable...though I admit I am in the minority on that one.
What we have here are the films I consider the best I saw this year, my favourite films and also the worst I saw in 2017. As always, I only consider films that were released in cinemas in the UK in 2017.
But before we get into those, here are my top 3 classic films that returned to cinema screens this year.
3. A Matter Of Life And Death
1. Singin' In The Rain
Singin' In The Rain is one of my all time favourite films and getting the chance to see it on the big screen was utterly wonderful. There were many other older films I saw that returned to the big screen, but these were the best of them.
The Worst
No-one ever sets out to make a bad film. Even Michael Bay. But try as they might, there are films that come along that, even with the best will in the world aren't that good.
These were the ones I saw this year that, well, were not good.
3. Rings
2. Cage Dive
1. The Bye Bye Man
While I think horror has generally been very good at the cinema this year, these three, if anything, prove no genre is perfect!
Favourites
As I have said before, I do think your favourite films aren't always the best ones. So, I have a list of the best I've seen all year and my favourites. While there is some crossover, the ones on the favourite list are those that I can watch over and over, the best ones not as much.
So, to that end, the favourite ones first.
10. Justice League
9. Radius
8. T2 Trainspotting
7. My Life As A Courgette
6. Our Evil
5. Dunkirk
4. The Red Turtle
3. Mother!
2. IT
1. Happy Death Day
Happy Death Day will never be considered a classic, or be a major Oscar winner. But it does that one thing a film should do better than any other this year. kept me entertained throughout.
There will be comments no doubt about Justice League being on this list. In terms of quality, it is a very flawed film. It's clear it has been cut back in its running time, some of the CGI is of poor quality. And yet, despite all the films issues, I loved it. There's a moment late on in the film involving Batman, that just had me smiling.
The magic of the films I guess.
The Best Of 2017
And finally we get to it, the ten films I think were the best films I saw in 2017 at the cinema. As I said, there is some crossover with the favourites list, but not necessarily in the same order. What I can say is that if you had asked me what I thought would make this list, I can pretty much guarantee most of these would not even have been considered. But then, that is one of the things I love about cinema, how it can surprise you.
And with that in mind, here we go.
10. Hounds Of Love
9. Lady Macbeth
8. A Ghost Story
7. T2 Trainspotting
6. The Red Turtle
5. IT
4. The Handmaiden
3. A Monster Calls
2. Dunkirk
1. Mother!
As I mentioned, cinema can throw up all kinds of films, ones that make you think, make you laugh, chill you to the bone, make you cry (two films on this list did!) Mother! may have been the most divisive film on this list, but for me it was without doubt the best film I saw this year at the cinema. You have to admire writer and director Darren Aronofsky for wanting to make a film like this and give Paramount Studios credit for backing such a film. I wish more film studios and companies would back films like this.
So there we are, the highlights (and in case of the worst, the lowlights!) of 2017 at the cinema. I saw 145 different films in the year. I hope to see more in 2018.
I hope 2018 at the cinema will be as surprising as 2017 has been.
