Isshiki Masakazu is a mystery novelist who also works as a consulting detective for the police in Kamakura. When he brings home his new wife, Akiko, he explains that Kamakura is a special place, where spirits, monsters and even Gods stay at times. But when Akiko's body vanishes, he has to travel to the 'other side' to find her spirit and try and bring her back...
Destiny: The Tale Of Kamakura is based on a Manga story by Ryohei Saigan. It's not something I read to be honest. The film is written by Takashi Yamazaki, who also directs. He's crafted a terrific tale, one that may seem a bit episodic, but cleverly plays the long game in that there is a story building behind those moments, one that the film hints at with artwork throughout the film, leading to emotional and well thought out final act.
The two leads are superb. Masato Saki plays Isshiki Masakazu and brings a lot of charm and heart to the role. He's matched by Mitsuki Takahata who plays Akiko. At first nervous and wary of Kamakura's secrets, she begins to embrace them, often surprising Masakazu and the spirits themselves.
The supporting cast are rather good too, including Sakura Ando as a Death Master, who helps and guides those who have died and need to move on and also Shin'ichi Tsutsumi who plays Honda, Masakazu's agent whose own story is quite touching.
As director Takashi Yamazaki tells the story very well indeed. Despite the fantastical aspects of the story, he keeps his two lead central, giving the film its heat and emotional aspects. When it does take a turn into full fantasy, it may not have the budget it truly needs, but what the director and his visual effects team comes up with works very well indeed. In some ways, especially a fantastic train journey, the concepts reminded me of some of the great Studio Ghibli films.
With a wonderful score, some impressive visuals and good production design, Destiny: The Tale Of Kamakura may not have the budget of a Hollywood film. But what it does have is much more imagination than most of Hollywood's efforts.
Its a charming, wonderful film, full of heart and emotion.
And I loved it.
Rating: 5/5
(sadly couldn't find a trailer with English subtitles!)
