A woman awakens to find herself bound and gagged in the attic of a house. After freeing herself, she tries to get out and find out why. As she does, she seems to hear voices at times, which leads to her waking up back in the attic, bound and gagged...
Infinitum: Subject Unknown was made in 2020 during the lockdown in the UK and shot on an iPhone. The film was directed by Matthew Butler-Hart, stars Tori Butler-Hart, with both of them writing the film. I was a huge fan of their last film, the creepy horror film, The Isle.
The opening parts of the film recall films like Groundhog Day or Happy Death Day, with events repeating themselves over and over as the woman, Jane, tries to work out what is going on. There's also an escape room-like quality too as she works things out. It's very well thought out.
Once the story leaves the confines of the house, there's an unsettling aspect to the film, that of the deserted streets Jane discovers as she gets away. Obviously, the Lockdown helps with these empty street scenes, which recall the empty London streets in 28 Days Later. They give the film an eerie quality.
I'm loathe to reveal more of the story in case it veers in spoiler territory, but will say throughout the film, we gets scenes of two scientists, played by Conleth Hill (Varys in Game Of Thrones) and Ian McKellen, discussing a science experiment and its findings. How these play into the events lead to a very chilling ending indeed.
The film is very well shot indeed by Matthew Butler-Hart. As I said, it was shot on an iPhone and he shoots the scenes, the early ones especially, in clever ways to simply avoid repeating himself every time. Obviously there was work on the film in post-production, which adds to the film well, but considering there was only him on set during the filming, it looks very good indeed. Goes to show just how good cameras on phones are at filming video!
Tori Butler-Hart is very good as Jane, going from frightened woman, tied up at the beginning to determined one, in finding out what is going on. On screen for essentially the entire film and with little dialogue she conveys her emotions, superbly. It's a great performance.
If there is issues with the film, they are likely down to the fact that the film is part of an ambitious, wider story the Butler-Hart's have planned. There will be a graphic novel and I believe plans are in motion for a TV series as well. I think once we have those, then we will know where the film fits into the overall story. But that said, what issues there are don't affect the film as a whole.
I was quite taken with the film, the unsettling atmosphere, the great score by Tom Kane, the mystery at its heart and its eventual reveal.
I really enjoyed this film and can't wait to see how this story continues.
Well worth checking out.
